my first day of community college exceeded my expectations! i always heard that in community college there's long lectures, professors that don't care about you, lots of homework, and it's hard to make friends. these things aren't true! at least not with my experience today. all of my professors said they don't believe in long lectures, they prefer class discussion. my professors were all super helpful and seem to care about their students tremendously. i'm not too sure about homework because it's my first day, but so far i only had to read a paragraph for english. i made a lot of friends today, too, so it's not hard to make friends.
i saw a LOT of familiar faces, which was cool. i haven't gone to school in this area since elementary school, so a lot of the people i saw i was friends with yearssssss ago. my friend Maric (she's the one in the picture below!), who's been my best friend since preschool also goes to my school. she really calmed my nerves today. thank you Lord for her and our friendship.
first class: Math 101 (Concepts of Elementary Math)
i had a hard time finding the room, but i did and i managed not to be late! i met a girl named Alyssa. she plays volleyball at our school and she wants to be a third grade teacher, like me!! i hope we can be friends! the professor is super cool. she seems like she cares about her students a lot. she told us we won't have to solve any math problems on our test. instead, it will ask what the student did wrong or how to explain the problem to a student. i think i'm gonna love this class. in fact it could quite possibly be my favorite math class i've ever taken (only because it has no math haha).
second class: Child Development 101
i have 10 minutes to get from my math class to this class, which is on the other side of campus. this is hard to accomplish when you have to worry about traffic, cross walks, and thousands of other students. but i made it on time! the professor is older and seems very knowledgeable. she's been a professor for over 30 years!! when i walked into the class i noticed my friend Christina, which made me so happy. we have to observe/interview two different stages of children and then write essays on it. i've never been so excited to write an essay! i think i'll write about my little cousins.
third class: History 150 (Native American History)
my new friend Tori and i realized we had our two afternoon classes together, which was awesome! the professor of this class is going to be my favorite i think! she's in her late 50s or early 60s and is the most active person i've ever met. she's published books, she's the international expert of Native American diseases (or something like that), leader of a homeless center, and helps with exhibits at the surfing museum. she also has an eyebrow piercing! she's quite the well-round person. this class seems so fun! the students are cool and obviously the prof. is, too! all our tests are online out of class and she encourages us to take the tests with classmates.
four class: English 49
this class is in a science lab room in the old building. there was even a chalkboard in the classroom. i've never had a chalkboard one of my classrooms. the professor is a cute old lady that wore a long floral skirt. she's so cute. it seems like i'm going to learn a lot about writing in this class!
p.s. before school today my cousin told me "make your life extraordinary". that comment really inspired me. there are no counselors or teachers to keep me going in college. where i go next is my decision, but if i listen to the Lord's plan for me and work hard i can make my like extraordinary. this is an exciting time!
"Let your eyes look directly forward, and you gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil." Proverbs 4:25-27
